A fire at Truro City Football Club only months after extensive refurbishment has seriously hit plans to promote it as a major venue for events.

Mark Hooper, director, said he was upset by what had happened. It would hit the busy social calendar in the coming weeks although none of the football facilities were effected

"This is a most unfortunate event, having just completed extensive refurbishment of the clubhouse and the ground over the summer closed season," he said.

"This fire is obviously being regarded by us as a setback in our plans. However we are confident that the temporary facilities that we hope to put in place will enable us to function as near normal as possible whilst all the necessary repairs are undertaken."

He added: "We will continue to welcome all past, present and future supporters to the club, particularly during this difficult time, and we are sure that the clubhouse will rise phoenix-like from the ashes."

At the height of the blaze smoke was seen billowing from the building in Treyew Road and the heat was so intense at one stage that shutters and double glazing melted.
