A CHARD businessman has said that he is lucky to be alive after an horrific accident which left him with a broken back.

Nick Cleal, a driving champion and owner of Millfield Motors, suffered two snapped vertebrae, two broken ribs and a haemorrhage behind his left eye, as he competed in the fourth round of the British Autocross Championships in Evesham last Saturday.

Speaking from the bed where doctors say he must remain for the next month, Nick, 58, told the News about his dramatic escape.
