Despite a broken hand and last minute computer failure putting his chances in jeopardy a 20-year-old waiter from Gunwalloe is hoping to get his big break at this year's Cornwall Film Festival.

Matthew Ferguson - who goes under the screen name of Alistair - is hoping to turn his life around and fulfil his dream of becoming a director after submitting a 30-minute film to this year's festival.

The Spanish Bullion is a smuggling tale based on Cornish history and he is now waiting to hear if his submission, which he also wrote and acted in, has been accepted for this November's event.

Matthew, from Gunwalloe, said: "I've always liked films and it's fun to create your own. The best bit is seeing what it looks like afterwards, when it's all edited together. It's always fun to see a finished project."
