A Porkellis couple who breed and sell alpacas had an excellent response when they held a charity open day at their 70-acre farm.

Around 130 people visited Carthvean Farm - the home of Andrew and Julie Taylor-Browne - raising almost £500 for the Henry Doubleday Research Association, which funds organic research, and local charity the Canine Crusaders.

The couple, who are Buddhist and vegetarian, keep cattle, goats, hens, ducks and a llama, grow their own organic vegetables and make their own cheese and butter, but it is the 35-strong herd of alpacas that forms the core of their enterprise.

Julie, who started off with just three of the animals five years ago, is now the biggest alpaca breeder in west Cornwall.

She said: "Alpacas are very versatile animals. There is no market for their meat, which is why we were attracted to them in the first place, but we sell them for breeding, as companion animals and pets, or for guarding other animals."
