Students and staff at Helston Community College were celebrating some hugely impressive GCSE results last week. The overall pass rate of 98 per cent was similar to last year's figure, but the pass rate at grades A* to C shot up from 52.6 per cent in 2004 to 65.3 per cent this year.

One department that displayed particularly good results was science, where students achieved a 73 per cent A* to C pass rate in a variety of different courses. The college's head of science, Wayne Jenkins, said the results were down to a hard-working team of staff and the recent introduction of more practical-based courses to suit different students.

Impressive results were also achieved in English literature, art, drama, French, Spanish, PE and design technology.

It was also smiles all round at Mullion School last week as students received their GCSE results.

An overall pass rate at grades A* to C of 57 per cent combined with some superb individual performances and many students achieving higher than expected grades.

The highest scoring student was Chrissie Oates, who notched up a hugely impressive eight A* and two A grades, followed closely by Kate Sherlock, with seven A* and three A grades.
