The brother of a Falmouth schoolteacher who died while surfing last September has raised £2,500 in his memory. Jonathan Quinn walked 1,200 miles from John O' Groats to Land's End to raise money for the Merlin Project, as a tribute to his brother Stephen, an art teacher at Falmouth School.

The brothers had previously done a charity walk together in aid of the same charity.

Jonathan, 25, said: "Steve and I did a charity walk before and I just thought to do another one would be quite good. It was really enjoyable."

Although now working as a restaurant manager in Plymouth and living in Callington, he grew up in Playing Place and his family still lives there.

The former Kea School and Penair School pupil said another inspiration for his walk was his family's next door neighbour in Playing Place, Sue Keystone, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

"She's a very strong lady and we wanted to do something for her," he said.

This time Jonathan walked with Martyn Miller, a "friend of a friend" from Bristol.

"He's just in to walking and climbing and all the things I'm in to.

"There was support all the way, people took over each day and helped out, setting up the campsites and cooking. We had the easiest job really," laughed Jonathan.

The pair took 47 days to complete their trip and decided to walk from John O' Groats to Land's End as "it was all down hill then".

Jonathan said he has always enjoyed outdoor pursuits but joked: "I was a foot taller when I started - I've been worn down."

The Merlin Project is currently raising funds to build a unit in Cornwall for people with multiple sclerosis.
