Humanitarian aid sent to America by the Helston-based ShelterBox organisation was among the first to reach areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
An initial consignment of boxes containing equipment including tents, tool kits and water purification tablets reached the stricken Gulf coast region last Thursday.
By the end of this week, a total of 1,200 boxes of aid will have been despatched from the Helston warehouse, providing shelter for some 24,000 people left homeless by the hurricane.
The first consignment of aid provided by the British government only left the UK on Monday.
ShelterBox founder Tom Henderson said volunteers had once again pulled out all the stops in response to a major natural disaster.
He said: "As soon as we heard the news we started packing 100 boxes and sent them on their way last Tuesday. They were on the ground days before the American army went in, and way before any other UK aid."
