SOMERSET'S fire chief has blasted local union officials following the breakdown of talks to avert industrial action.

Clive Kemp has accused local Fire Brigades Union bosses of walking out of a meeting last week and threatening to ask firefighters to take industrial action.

He claimed he made better progress with the national FBU leader.

The row centres on the lack of insurance for firefighters attending terrorist incidents.

Mr Kemp accused local FBU bosses of raising issues that had already been dealt with.

Following a meeting with FBU General Secretary Matt Wrack, Mr Kemp said he expected any industrial action to be suspended until after the FBU executive meeting later this month.

Until then, management has suspended training for FBU members on New Dimension equipment.
