The HMS Seahawk Volunteer Band consists of military and civilian musicians. The band can be seen at various events throughout Cornwall either marching or giving concert performances.
Although the band is based at RNAS Culdrose and run by the Royal Navy, the programme of music played is far from a strict military style. The band is very versatile and plays a wide range of music from marches and overtures to big band and swing. As the name says, it is a volunteer band and is always on the lookout for new people to join.
The bandmaster is Colour Sergeant Paul Nolan Royal Marines and he has been with the Seahawk Band since May 2004. Paul joined the Royal Marines Band Service in September 1986 and trained at their school of music in Deal, Kent. After passing out of training he was drafted to the CinCFleet Band in London where he travelled abroad quite extensively and performed at many state and royal functions.
In May 1994, the band in London was disbanded and Paul moved to the Scotland Band, based at RNSE Caledonia, Rosyth. From there he attended his Junior Command Course at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, passed and was promoted to band corporal. In September 1997, he moved to the Dartmouth Band, and continued his promotion courses, culminating in promotion to band sergeant in 2002. After several years at the Britannia Royal Naval College he was promoted to band colour sergeant and drafted to HMS Seahawk to take over the running of the Volunteer Band where he looks forward to spending some very happy years.
