SEX offenders could be among the patients housed at a secure mental health unit proposed for the Westpark26 business estate at Chelston, near Wellington, it was confirmed yesterday.

The two-storey complex would cover three acres and include a gymnasium, gardens and arts space, as well as a café, bank and shop.

The facility would cater for about 75 residents and employ up to 100 people.

It is understood it will care for people with severe but treatable mental health issues which could include people found guilty of crimes such as sex offences.

It would be run by the Priory Group, which also runs The Priory Hospital in Roehampton, London, often used by celebrities addicted to drink or drugs.

A Priory Group spokeswoman said more details will be available within the next week.
