A TAUNTON man has scooped a prestigious Best Design award at Bournemouth University's annual Festival of Design and Innovation.
Robert Forsyth, who has just completed a degree in design engineering, won the £700 award for his original sustainable hybrid streetlight, that used alternative energy sources to work.
Speaking about his design Robert said: "Most modern streetlights are very inefficient and cost us millions per year.
"My interest in alternative energy convinced me to design a sustainable, functional streetlight that does not rely on fossil fuels, but solar and wind power.
Prof Kamran Tabeshfar, head of the academic group in design at the university, said: "We are pleased to congratulate Robert on his project, which reflects all the elements and principles of good design.
"Robert's achievement in winning a Best Design award certainly underlines his hard work and commitment and we wish him well as he sets out on his career."
Bournemouth University's 2006 Festival of Design and Innovation showcased over 150 new student designs across a range of industries including automotive, household, health, engineering, sport and leisure and environment.
