THE Somerset Nuffield Hospital is launching a new staff travel plan in a bid to cut traffic levels.

Under the new plan staff will be offered alternative means of getting to work rather than by car.

The hospital, in Staplegrove Elm, hopes this will dramatically reduce the number of cars parked at or near the site.

General manager Philip Eke said the hospital had reviewed staff travel arrangements in response to the needs of the local community and its patients.

He said: "It was becoming clear to us that we needed to come up with a comprehensive list of alternative travel arrangements that would improve the car parking issue which can affect residents within the vicinity of the hospital.

"The challenge was to come up with a travel plan that would do this, but also work for our staff.

"My team therefore looked at the full range of transportation options and have developed an incentive focused travel plan that, when it launches in September, will go a long way to tackling the congestion problems around the hospital."
