TAUNTON shoppers were warned of the growing risk of diabetes in the town centre on Saturday (August 11).

Nursing staff from the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's Community Diabetes Service, the Diabetic Eye Screening Service and volunteers with Diabetes UK held a Diabetes Awareness Day.

In addition to free advice, they offered blood checks to people who thought they might be at increased risk of the disease.

Jenny Lawrence-Jones, a diabetic eye screener with the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said: “Diabetes is known to affect over two million people in the UK, but it's estimated that another 750,000 people have the condition but just don't know it.

“Too many people don't appreciate the long-term effect of eating a poor quality diet and never taking any exercise.”
