TORRENTIAL rain and high winds may have affected turnout but did not dent the spirit of those who did make it to Dunster Show on Friday.

All the classes went ahead as planned, with the best of horses, cattle and sheep being brought from miles around to compete in the 166th annual show, at Dunster Castle Lawns.

Trade stands suffered with reduced visitor numbers but many still turned up ready to battle the elements.

Show secretary Rebecca Langdon said: “The people who were there seemed to really enjoy it – it brought out the true British spirit. Numbers were down but that was to be expected with the weather.

“I have never seen anything like it and I have worked at the show for 25 years. I am told the last time it was this bad was in the 1970s. The kids had a ball playing in the puddles and mud in their wellies.

“It was unfortunate but so many shows have been cancelled this year people were just delighted it went ahead. The sun did come out in the afternoon and, most importantly, all the classes still took place.”
