A GARDEN will be renamed in the town to remember a Victorian businessman and writer as part of a project to raise his profile in the area.
The Town Trust’s latest meeting decided to rename Langport Town Garden to remember Walter Bagehot.
It was felt the garden would be an ideal place because it is directly opposite the building where he was born.
The Walter Bagehot Memorial Fund steering group put forward the idea and proposed to rename the garden the Walter Bagehot Memorial Garden – but an official name could not be decided on.
Councillors voted to approve linking the garden to Bagehot in principle but decided to see if more suggestions for names could be found.
Other names suggested included the Bagehot Town Garden and the Bagehot Memorial Garden.
