THE market for collectables of all types seems undimmed and a diverse range of items was snapped up at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s successful quarterly collectors’ sale.
Top of the pops was a selection of memorabilia relating to The Beatles. This included a printed flyer for a performance at The Gaumont Theatre, Taunton, in 1963 and a Beatles Fan Club flexi disc from Christmas of that year.
There had been enormous pre-sale interest in the lot with a number of bidders registering bids well in advance of Friday’s sale at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.
Interest rocketed on the day and auctioneer Peter Rixon, who oversees the collectors sales, brought the hammer down on the top price of the day - £4,450.
Nostalgia was the name of the game as regards a number of the best selling items at the well-spported sale.
Autographs of British politicians and literary figures attracted interest from phone bidders and the internet alike collectively selling for more than £2,350.
The day began with a robust coin section featuring more than 100 lots which all sold. This included three single owner collections, which realised £5,935, £7,800 and £5,320 respectively. Indeed there were just a handful of unsold items throughout the entire day. The overall selling rate was a pleasing 97%.
A particular highlight of the coin section was a Great Britain Victoria collection, which included Maundy coins and sold to a room bidder for £700.
A smart group of London and South Western Railway and Southern Railway enamel destination signs pushed the nostalgia button with bidders and sold for an impressive £1,400. The appetite for railwayana is strong and there were good prices achieved throughout the section.
An early 18th Century sealed and dated onion wine bottle achieved £750, while a Second World War archive relating to Ernest George Evans, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers went for £500. This included a Japanese NCO’s sword and helmet as well as a canvas shoulder bag dated 1941, a named kit bag, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-45 and various cap badges.
