EXCELLENT prices throughout all sections ensured auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were kept busy throughout their monthly antiques sale.
Room bidders, online and phone interest all emerged with a range of high calibre items at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.
An online bidder paid the top price of the day for an unsigned pen and ink, gouache and watercolour of Aurangzebs Mosque and River Ganges Waterfront, Varanasi. The 19th Century Indian School painting was bought for £2,415.
Three room bidders were among those vying for ownership of a gentleman’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air King. It came in its original box along with a guarantee for 1985 and a calendar card for the same year. It had generated much pre-sale interest. Eventually one of the room bidders edged out the competition and paid £2,220 for the timepiece.

The same figure - £2,220 - was achieved for a bronze bust of a classical male. Signed and dated “Sabatino De Angelis, Napoli 1893” the piece adorned the front cover of the auction catalogue. It was bought by an online bidder.
• UNIQUE: A set of wirework chairs by Harry Bertoia for Knoll
A set of 12 polished chrome wirework chairs by Harry Bertoia for Knoll was another success with a battle between the internet and a phone bidder for ownership. The net won out with a call of £2,160.
A portrait of a naked elderly couple by Robert Lenkiewicz caused a stir with the internet and sold for £2,030, while a pair of seascapes by Dutch artist Warner Gyselman went to a room bidder for £1,000.
The auction featured a selection of West country art and a number of good prices were achieved. A private collection of works by local artist Harry Frier proved especially popular.
Collectively bought for over £6,000. Notable prices included £740 from a room bidder for an early signed and dated watercolour of the East Side of North Street and £550 for a watercolour of the Cross Keys Inn, Norton Fitzwarren. This was also signed and dated.
A comprehensive jewellery section witnessed a number of excellent prices including £1525 for a chain and £1,170 for an 18-carat gold open faced pocketwatch.

A tiny – just over three centimetres high – Victorian silver nutmeg grater by Joseph Willmore, Birmingham 1843, sold for £380, while a canteen of late Victorian silver old English pattern flatware by Aldwinkle & Slater, London 1888, was bought by a room bidder for £1,360.
Preparations will now begin for two sales in September – the regular monthly sale on September 6 and the quarterly collectors’ sale on September 7.
