Have you ever managed to kill off a houseplant? Whether you meant to or not, it’s easy to overwater them or even forget about them.
That’s why when I heard about Willow, I knew I had to try its plant monitor to see if it made me more conscious about my plant, and (spoiler alert), it did.
So, if you’re putting off adding cute plants to your home because you might kill them, this could be the solution you’ve been looking for.
Willow is a plant monitor that sits in the pot with your indoor plant and feeds information to your phone via the app through Wi-Fi, and it’s a constant reminder that you’re responsible for your plant’s health and life, essentially.

I used the Willow plant monitor and kept my houseplant alive
I was gifted a starter pack which contains one plant monitor and costs £34.99, and it’s all you need to get started, minus a houseplant of course.
Following the instructions, the monitor was set up in a couple of minutes, and I was able to see how my plant was doing shortly after.
You’ll need to select your houseplant on the app and you can even give it a name if you want to.
Then you can find out more about your plant and what it needs to thrive.
The Willow app gives you an overall percentage that tells you how well your plant is doing – this is your Plant Happiness score.
It will also include a phrase that describes how it’s coping with its current situation.

Some of the phrases I’ve had come up include:
- I could be better…
- Feeling good!
- Not vibing my surrounds
It also tells you if your plant is getting enough light and water and if it is coping well with the temperature and humidity of the room it’s in.
For me, the best part is that you can set up notifications so your phone pings and tells you when you need to water it or if it’s lacking light.
These notifications can be direct instructions, or you can receive sassy prompts from your plant, which is what I chose because why wouldn’t you want your plant demanding water from you?

The app also gives you tasks, encouraging you to add fertiliser or water to the soil, for example.
While it’s a really simple device, I think if you’re forgetful like me but want to share your house with plants, it’s a really good way to make sure you’re keeping on top of watering it and giving it exactly what it needs to thrive.
I’d like to think that no houseplant will ever die on my watch now, but we’ll see about that...
