NATIONAL Highways South West has announced shortly after 7.30am that the closure has been lifted.

A spokesperson said: "The closure has now been removed and all lanes are now running.

"Thanks for your patience. Have a safe onward journey."

MOTORISTS heading north up the M5 are warned the motorway is expected to be closed for several hours this morning (Monday, January 31).

The closure is due to a "police led incident" between Junctions 21 (Weston-super-Mare) and 20 (Clevedon).

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said: "It’s expected to remain closed into the morning rush hour while emergency services are at the scene of a collision which happened just after 12am (midnight) on Monday 31 January.

"The B3133 Kenn Road is also closed in both directions.

"We’d advise road users find alternative routes.

"There is a diversion (follow the solid triangle) via the A370 towards Bristol and the A4 to rejoin the M5 at junction 18 (Avonmouth)."

Police are appealing for anyone with any information that could assist their investigation into the incident to call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 005 of 31 January.

A spokesperson for National Highways South West said: "The M5 northbound between J21 (Weston-super-Mare) and J20 (Clevedon) remains closed for Avon and Somerset Police investigation work this morning.

"The closure is expected to be in place for several hours.

"Avon and Somerset Police and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene."
