TRULL rower Becky Wilde has qualified for the Olympic double skull rowing semi finals with rowing partner Mathilda Hodgkins Byrne after coming through a heat on Saturday (July 27).

The pair were up against teams from the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United States and Italy in their heat in France.

The pair led off from the start, only falling back to second behind New Zealand towards the end.

The top three automatically qualify for the semi finals, due to take place from 9.50am on Tuesday (July 30). Great Britain and New Zealand were joined by the United States in automatically qualifying. Netherland and Italy will face the Repechage - heats held for teams not qualifying automatically.

The team on Becky Wilde and Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne finished with a time of six minutes, 52.310 seconds.

The duo qualified for the Olympics after winning the ‘double scull’ space at the final Olympic Qualifying Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Originally, Wilde, 26, was a swimmer for over ten years when she first arrived at the University of Bath before switching to rowing at the end of her first year.

The Olympian’s parents are both PE teachers and played sports internationally, as have her brother and sister.

Coming from a very sporty family, it seems that Wilde was destined to represent Team GB.
