Minehead fans will be keen to see a repeat of last week’s 11-goal thriller when the Blues entertain Shirehampton at the Rec for an Errea county league cup tie on Saturday (3pm).

When the two sides met in August the match finished 1-1.

And they will have their work cut out to match the excitement of last Saturday’s twice-postponed Somerset Senior Cup tie at Langford Rovers which finished 6-5 in favour of the home side.

Minehead chairman Brian Walder said: “This was a superb advertisement for the Somerset County League, with two sides playing attacking, competitive, committed football.

“It had everything you could ask for from a game of football and was won with almost the last kick of the 120 minute match.

“I cannot understand why more people do not watch football at grass roots level, this match actually had fewer supporters watching than goals scored.”

The home side took the lead on 26 minutes, slightly against the run of play, when Ryan Havard collected a long pass from Leigh White and cleverly side-stepped Chris Meredith’s advance leaving himself with an empty goal to shoot home into.

Within six minutes Minehead were on level terms when after a good move Luke Webber was on hand to shoot into the top corner from 12 yards out. Seconds before half time Minehead took the lead after clever play from Aaron Deeks who set up Webber for his second.

The first goal of the second period came from Havard when he pounced on a loose ball to give Meredith no chance from 12 yards.

On the hour Minehead edged their way back into the lead when Webber completed his hat-trick by volleying home a dangerous Stefan Phillips free kick. The Blues went further ahead on the 70th minute when a trademark in-swinging free kick from Stefan Phillips evaded everybody and nestled in the far corner.

After Mike Graddon replaced the hobbling Martyn Phillips, who became Minehead’s third striker unable to continue in the proceedings, Chris Yeates was booked for an innocuous looking challenge.

And a few moments later the same player appeared to have put Minehead 5-2 up when he netted the rebound after Luke Webber’s shot had been parried, but the referee decided that Yeates was in an offside position.

Two goals in a four minute spell from the home side saw them pull back to 4-4.

During the first period of extra time Leigh White’s shot from 30 yards was deflected by Mike Mullen’s attempt to block, and it rose above the diving Chris Meredith to make it 5-4.

Luke Freeman put Minehead back on level terms when he chested down a free kick from Matt Cracknell before shooting confidently past Hill from 10 yards out.

The second period of extra time saw more end to end play but with penalties looking like being the only way to separate the sides, Blakemore ran through to collect a long pass from deep, and his chip over Meredith.
