MINEHEAD Football Club start their 'Y125' year of celebrations this weekend with a string of events that should be of interest to local football fans.
The main event is Sunday’s re-staging of the first game ever played by a Minehead XI when they hosted a Selworthy team on November 30, 1889 – exactly 125 years later to the day.
The Minehead XI will be a cross section of first team, reserves and committee members, and their opponents, representing the Selworthy XI will be the 2014 Somerset Cup winning West Somerset Veterans team.
The match kicks off at 2pm and at half time there will be a Prize Penalty King competition for 16s and under (competitors must be in kit).
Before kick off, starting at noon, an exhibition of youth matches and training sessions will take place.
A buffet will be available in the clubhouse when proceedings finish around 4pm.
On Saturday afternoon, the Rec hosts its first ‘Minehead’ derby for many years when Minehead Reserves face Alcombe Rovers in the Taunton & District League Division 2, kicking off at 2pm.
On Saturday evening, the first Y125 social event of the anniversary year is a quiz night in the clubhouse, starting at 7.30pm, with an entry fee of £5 for teams of at least two and players or more.
The team scoring the most points will take 50% of the pot.
