WITH postponements aplenty over the last couple of months, I’ve watched far more curling than I have Taunton Town matches recently.
The Peacocks have at least been able to get some games in, whereas Wellington didn’t have a single game between January 13 and last Saturday due to waterlogged pitches.
In the Somerset County League, Watchet Town haven’t played an away match since November 18 for the same reason, while Ilminster Town haven’t played at all since January 13.
Ilminster’s Andy Fish told us that Non-League football should at least consider a mid-season break, or perhaps install more 4G pitches.
Taunton chairman Kevin Sturmey, having confirmed that Tuesday night’s scheduled game was off, indicated that he is also open to change.
Not so much to Saturday football over the winter, but midweek games – which are not helping the condition of pitches, or clubs’ finances, with significantly smaller crowds on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Peacocks manager Leigh Robinson thinks the high number of postponements is more down to bad luck this season.
“It’s so weather dependent,” he said.
“Last year there weren’t many games being called off; this year there’s been a lot of rain on Fridays and Saturdays, which is costing clubs their games.”
What do you think? Would a winter break, or more midweek games being played in March and April rather than January and February, help?
