WELLINGTON conceded their first league double for three seasons as they went down by one wicket at home to second-placed Chew Magna in a remarkable game in Division One of the Best Western Shrubbery Hotel Somerset Cricket League.

After being asked to bat, Wellington lost two early wickets but Mark Salter (35) and Mark Saunders (28) got them back on track.

After they went wickets continued to fall but Thom Trott (41) marshalled the tail well as Wellington were bowled out for 154 with one ball left.

Wellington's in-form opening attack of David Marshall (3-26 from 12) and Kevin Symons (2-19 from 12) then dismantled the Chew top order before Trott chipped in with two wickets to leave Chew at 86-8 and on the brink of defeat.

That became 105-9 but, an extraordinary display of hitting from the burly Ken Mondair, who hit 41 runs from the last 15 balls to finish 62 not out, took them to victory with three balls left.

Taunton Civil Service Radiac and Outcasts defeated local rivals Staplegrove by nine wickets to move up to fourth.

After choosing to bat first at the Civil Service Club, the visitors lost Dave Penny early on but Brendan Craggs (22) and Jon Hodge (19) helped get the innings back on track. But when they went, the Grove fell away badly and, with Tom Pantling (12) the only other batsman to reach double figures, they were all out for 94 in the 34th over. For Outcasts, teenagers Luke Desave (4-32 from 11) and Lewis Knight (3-10 from six) were the pick of a fine allround bowling effort.

In reply, the home team were posed with few problems in reaching their modest target as openers Greg Jackson (42 not out) and 16-year-old Ollie Iles (41) took the side to the brink of victory.

Iles was out with one run needed for victory.

Also in the top division, leaders Wembdon lost their first game of the season, suffering a shock defeat at the hands of lowly South Petherton.

In Division Two, Fitzhead went down by five wickets at home to promotion-chasing Belvedere. The hosts reached 166-8 batting first, but the Weston-super-Mare outfit passed their score with five batsmen down.

Watchet suffered a disappointing two-wicket defeat away to bottom side Peasedown.

Jason Strong (40) and Phil Milton (30) helped Watchet recover from 60-4 and some big hitting by Martin Strong (39) took them to 207 all out.

Nick Virgin and Martin Strong snapped up three wickets apiece but could not prevent Peasedown getting to their target with two wickets in hand.

North Curry maintained their narrow two-point lead over Curry Rivel at the top of the fourth division with a 33-run victory at home to Bagborough at Taunton School.

Sam Robinson formed the backbone of the home side's innings, hitting a superb unbeaten 105 to guide the team to 223-5 batting first.

The visitors fell short in their run chase despite the efforts of Pete Redford who scored 54.

Curry Rivel remain just behind the leaders after winning by eight wickets away to Spaxton.

The home team made a useful 161-9 batting first but it proved insufficient as Curry Rivel cruised home with Andy Selway 54 not out at the end.

In Division Five, an inspired spell of bowling from J. Lincott set Taunton St Andrews A on their way to victory at home to Sampford Arundel.

He snapped up 5-7 to bowl the visitors out for 92 and Saints made it to their target for the loss of one batsman.

ANDREW Mardon and Ashley Vaughan were the heroes of Taunton Deane Cavaliers' crushing 142-run victory at home to Taunton St Andrews B in Division One of the Somerset 2nd XI competition.

Deane looked in trouble after being reduced to 53-5 but Mardon's 66 and 33 from Jon Dunn helped them to 191-8 at the close. For Saints, Martin Baldock bowled a fine spell to take 4-23 from his 12 overs.

In reply, three of the Saints top four hit 13 but that was as good as it got with the visitors unceremoniously dumped out for 49 in 23.3 overs, Vaughan finishing with 6-20 from 12 overs.

Wellington 2nds produced a brave display before going down by 11 runs away to title-chasing Street 2nds. The home team were restricted to 212-5 batting first and, despite the efforts of Simon Rudd, who hit a cracking unbeaten 87, Wellington fell short at 201-8.

Also in the top division, Staplegrove 2nds went down by 25 runs in a high-scoring clash at home to Glastonbury Lambs.

In Division Two, Taunton A produced a fine display to win by three wickets away to Belvedere 2nds. Sam Dalling took 3-43 as the hosts reached a competitive 209-6 batting first.

In reply, Taunton were struggling at 96-6 but excellent half centuries from Dalling (56) and Mustafa Shaikh, who hit eight fours and a six in his unbeaten 66, helped them to victory with five balls remaining.

Bishops Lydeard 2nds consolidated their second place in Division Three SW with a comprehensive 115-run win over North Perrott 2nds.

Lydeard won the toss, and scored 257-3 thanks to the efforts of Tim Crowe (109 not out) and Stephen Clift (95).

In reply, North Perrott struggled against a young Lydeard bowling attack and were all out for 142 in the 35th over.

The pick of the Lydeard bowlers were Jamie Street 3-21 and Graham Merceica 3-37. Lydeard meet leaders Ilminster this weekend.
