BISHOPS Lydeard manager Neil Harper believes his current squad is stronger than the one that finished last season.
Lydeard were ninth in Division One of the Somerset County League last season and Harper is hopeful they can better that.
Lydeard have produced some impressive displays in pre-season friendlies, and looked strong despite a 2-1 defeat at Premier Division side Bridgwater Town Reserves last week.
Lydeard's goal came from Neil Gage, who has netted four in three friendlies.
Harper said: "It was a good display from us against a strong side which contained a few first-teamers.
"They had us under the cosh for periods but I was very pleased with the way we defended.
"I was delighted with our new keeper Lloyd Irish who is only 18 but showed barrel-loads of confidence.
"We have made a few new signings and Darren Knowling is back at the heart of defence so I think we've got a stronger all-round squad than last season. I'm confident we can improve our finishing position."
Knowling has returned after a spell in Australia, while Irish, striker Mark Oram, midfielders Lee Palk and Simon Dennehy and Gage have all committed to the club.
But Lydeard will be without midfielders Jack Adams and Matt Fowler who have signed for Wellington.
Lydeard start the season with a home game against Keynsham Town Reserves.
