THEY say ‘good things come in threes’ and this could not be more accurate for what has undoubtedly been an unpredictable yet perfect season for Galmington side Hovelands.
The 2017/18 campaign has seen them become Somerset League (Premier Division) champions and Knock Out Cup winners and, to complete the hat-trick, they have now earned promotion to Regional League 3 after winning in the play-offs over the weekend.
What a brutal day play-offs was; a relentless four-match battle brought blood, sweat and tears (of joy)!
In the first match, Plymstock were all out of stock when Hovelands came back from behind to win 28-25.
Next up, the beasts of Bodmin Moor beat Hovelands 27-19 – this being only Hovelands’ second loss of the whole season
Determined to bounce back, the Galmington side pulled themselves together and beat WC Scaffolding 28-20, and that result set up a must-win game against Titans.
Going into the second half only one goal up, the match could have gone either way, but the Greek gods weren’t on Titans’ side.
Instead it was Hovelands who triumphed, their determination and grit culminating in a final score of 24-17.
And that proved enough to see Hovelands through to Regional League 3 for next season.
Many thanks go to Lyds, H and Daisy for seamlessly joining the Magnificent Seven in the Hovelands squad, to make it a Magnificent 10!
Thank yous also go to Lisa, Jazz, Sergeant Squire and Mini Squire for their support, wise words, coaching and motivation.
And so with a tinge of sadness and a smidge of disbelief Hovelands take a bow, bursting with pride and joy, on the conclusion of their amazing 2017/2018 season.
Somerset Division 2
Queensway 41, Spears 38
QUEENSWAY also played their final fixture of the season, which had been rearranged due to the snow.
Facing a strong opposition in Spears and playing amid billowing smoke (from a huge fire right next to the court), Queensway played their hearts out.
Up by six in the first quarter, the Galmington team started as they meant to go on.
Against a very loud and well supported opponent, Queensway held their heads and continued with confidence, remaining six ahead at half time.
With some stellar shooting from player of the match Lucy Hemmings, Queensway held on to the lead under mounting pressure from Spears.
With a final score of 41-38, it was an amazing victory on a hot and very smoky day.
