DOM Bess finished with 57 as his England debut ended with the hosts being humbled by nine wickets against Pakistan at Lord's.
Somerset bowler Bess, alongside Taunton-born Jos Buttler, had kept England in the game on Saturday, with a century partnership saving their side from the ignominy of an innings defeat.
However, it took only 25 minutes and 27 balls for Pakistan to end England's resistance on day four of the first Test.
Buttler was first to go, trapped lbw by Mohammad Abbas for a fine 67, and he was soon followed by Mark Wood (4) and Stuart Broad (0).
Bess could only add another two runs to his overnight 55, clean bowled by Mohammad Amir to bring the innings to a close.
That left Pakistan needing only 64 runs to win, and although James Anderson bowled Azhar Ali for just four, the run chase was still a formality, as Imam ul-Haq hit 18no and Haris Sohail 39no to complete the nine-wicket win.
Bess felt the full force of the Pakistan charge, with 0-29 off 3.4 overs.
England have until Friday, June 1, to refocus for the second Test at Headingley.
Bess' efforts with the bat may well have kept him in the side, while England may consider calling up James Hildreth, as both Mark Stoneman and Dawid Malan continue to disappoint at the top of the batting order.
