TAUNTON driver Craig Welsher has moved up to fifth in the Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight Challenge standings after two impressive fourth place finishes at Silverstone last weekend.
The 23-year-old Silverstone Scholarship Winner returned to the circuit where he made his mark earlier in the year to to earn the right to race with the Hyperion Motorsport team.
Welsher qualified in fifth for the first race and after being involved in a seven car battle for the podium he managed a respectable fourth, despite being hit in the side by another competitor damaging the exhaust.
Race two was a replay of the multiple car battle for supremacy which saw Welsher challenging for lead at several occasions but the outcome was another fourth place and the fastest lap of the race which meant an extra point.
Steve Hindle, managing director of Hyperion Motorsport was impressed by Welsher's form.
He said: "He immediately demonstrated race pace, which is surprising for a complete novice, but what is most remarkable is that he is holding his own on the track against current caterham champions."
Welsher is now ranked fifth in the overall championship standings. The next rounds of Caterham Motorsport's championship are at Croft on September 8 and 9.
