Devon and Exeter League Premier Division: Thorverton 2, Wellington Res 1.
A LATE penalty denied Wellington Reserves a point in their first game since winning promotion to the Premier Division.
Wellington, who won promotion and the East Devon Senior Cup last season, were not at their best but did just about enough to deserve a point.
The hosts went in front midway through the opening period when Wellington failed to head a corner clear and keeper Martin Nicholls, who enjoyed a fine debut, was beaten from close range.
The hosts remained on top but could not break through for a second time before the break when Wellington switched to 4-3-3.
The change seemed to work as Wellington looked brighter after half-time and levelled on the hour mark when Jon Stanyard released Craig Aspin who scored from an acute angle.
The rest of the half was an even affair but the home team grabbed the points late on from the penalty spot after Sean Maunder was adjudged to have brought their striker down.
Wellington, who were away to Feniton last night (Wedensday) are away to Topsham Town on Saturday.
