TAUNTON St Andrews suffered a mixed weekend, recording a league victory at home to local rivals Bridgwater on Saturday before going down to Weston-super-Mare in the regional semi-final of the North Gear Twenty20 Cup on Sunday.

On Saturday, stand-in skipper Mike Burns won the toss and asked visitors Bridgwater to bat the Wyvern Club.

They found the going tough in the face of some tight bowling and, after reaching 100-2, lost their last eight wickets for 102 runs and were bowled out on the last ball of the innings for 202.

Leg spinner Kevin Sedgbeer was the pick of the bowlers, snapping up 3-41 from 16 overs, while paceman Mike Parsons (3-54 from 16) was also in the wickets. For Bridgwater, Rob Woodman made a patient 62.

Saints always looked likely to reach their target after Mike Burns (35) and Brian Hoyle (60) put on 59 for the first wicket.

Their wickets fell either side of Martin Jenkins' (13) dismissal but the side were guided to a seven-wicket victory with four overs left by Paul Lawrence.

He smashed an unbeaten 67 from 77 balls and shared an unbroken stand of 63 with Steven Jenkins (22).

The victory means Saints still have an outside chance of claiming the Premier One title with one game left, which sees them travel to face Weston.

On Sunday, Saints' bowlers were put to the sword as Weston smashed 194-6 in their 20 overs in the North Gear Twenty20 match at Bedminster.

Robin d'Souza (62 from 32 balls) and Shabil Ahmed (55 from 43) put on 107 for the first wicket to give Weston a great foundation for their big score which was helped by 16 wides.

That was always a big ask for Saints and they were eventually well short, being bowled out for 110 in 15.5 overs. Dan Hawkins top scored with 31 from 14 balls in a knock that contained four sixes.
