Jack Butland, who was born in Clevedon and attended Clevedon Community College, has made 78 appearances in the English top-flight for Stoke but has found himself plying his trade in the Championship this year following the club’s relegation, writes Alfie House.
One of Somerset’s most successful exports in recent times, England goalkeeper Butland has made 28 appearances this season, keeping clean sheets in 10, as Stoke find themselves 15th in the division.
Perhaps the best of those clean sheets was an inspired man-of-the-match performance touted as a “Jack Butland super show” away to Bristol City.
Now 25 years old, Butland is a seasoned professional and could feature in the Premier League again soon.
Youngster Archie Collins has been enjoying more success this season.
The 19-year-old from Edington, near Bridgwater, has been rewarded with a new long-term contract in January 2019 that will see him remain an Exeter player, after scoring his first senior goal for Exeter against Swindon on New Years day.
Grecians boss Matt Taylor described Collins' strike as a “wonder goal” and a “credit to his performances in the last five or six matches."
There looks to be much more to come from exciting attacker Collins as he aims to continue his rise into the first team - see our interview with him here.
Taunton lad Charlie Clough has taken the brave step of moving to the Singapore League for the 2019 season.
The former Bristol Rovers academy graduate and Forest Green defender has moved to Brunei's DPMM to link up with his former Forest Green Manager Adrian Pennock.
His new side finished as runners up in the Singapore cup in 2018 and finished third in the league.
Despite this, DPMM and Clough may be competing in Indonesia’s Liga 1 during 2020 after the club expressed the desire to leave the Singapore competition.
Tom Nichols, from Wellington, has worked his way up the football pyramid, joining league one side Bristol Rovers from Peterborough in 2017.
However, the striker has found goals hard to come by this season, yet to find the net for struggling Rovers despite playing 1349 minutes of football.
Rovers find themselves sat in the relegation zone, and Nichols will be hoping he can pick up form and help his side escape the drop.
Scott Laird, who grew up in Bridgwater, has moved on loan to League One Walsall for the remainder of the 2018/19 season.
Parent club Forest Green have allowed the 30-year-old left back to return to the saddlers where he became a popular figure during the 2016/17 season, after not making a league appearance this season.
Laird had his second debut for mid-table Walsall last weekend in a 3-0 win over Gillingham.
Yoevil-born Ryan Seager has returned to parent club Southampton this January after spending the first half of the season on loan at Dutch club Telstar.
The loan was intended to be a season long move but was cut short after underwhelming performances.
The centre-forward made 11 appearances in the Dutch second division, scoring on two occasions.
Seager has yet to establish himself at Southampton and has been training with Bristol Rovers in hopes of a permanent move to the League One side, but the Gas manager has made no guarantees of a move.
