Somerset Premier
Wiveliscombe 90, Weston Hornets 2nds 7
AS the scoreline suggests, Wiveliscombe proved far to strong for a Hornets team who, to their credit, competed well for a team who were never going to trouble a home side who ended up scoring 14 tries to boost their points difference, writes Roger Bellamy.
Wiveliscombe, playing down the recreation ground slope, had the game wrapped up by half-time after crossing for eight tries.
Winger Dan Clarke scored twice with George Rowe, Tom Litten, Jake Sharland, Tom Stone, Dan Smythe-Moore and Richard Wike all crossing for a try each.
George Rowe converted six to give the home team a 52-0 lead at half-time.
Hornets may have been hoping for a bit of respite in the second half playing down the slope but that never materialised with the home team adding a further six tries.
Top try scorer Jake Sharland completed a hat-trick while Ross Pearson, Kane Pepper and Matt Ellis added further scores to take the try count to 14.
Fly-half George Rowe kicked four second half conversions to bring his tally to 10 for the match. Hornets did cross for a consolation try scored by Tom Lewis with Dec Dorrington adding the conversion.
Wiveliscombe have no game on Saturday and their next fixture will be a real test away to Oldfield Old Boys in Bath on March 2.
Oldfield OBs are fourth in the table and are a real handful on their own ground.
Wivey have five games remaining in the 2018/19 season, three away and two at home.
Three of those matches are against teams in the top half of the division so the West Somerset team must continue to play to their full potential to push for promotion.
