AMID all the nonsense surrounding the ‘European Super League’ this week, the Uhlsport Somerset County League’s Senior and Junior Cups got under way.
Wells City Reserves began their Group B campaign with a 3-0 win at home to Welton Rovers, with Will Reilly, Darren Maynard and Rob Banfield scoring the goals in a dominant performance.
Wells are back in action this Saturday (3pm), at home to Westfield.
Burnham United went one goal better, as Joe Selway (2), Cameron Birch and Josh Watkins scored in a 4-0 thumping of Nailsea & Tickenham Reserves in Group D.
Burnham visit Uphill Castle this Saturday (3pm).
There have been two rounds of matches in Group E, and Chard Town have two wins.
On Saturday they eased to a 4-0 victory away to Staplegrove, with James Boyland (2), Ryan Parris and Scott Wells-Burr getting the goals.
Then, on Tuesday, the Robins won 2-0 at home to Middlezoy Rovers, thanks to Parris and Wells-Burr.
Middlezoy had won their opening match, but had to wait until the 89th minute to break down a resolute Minehead side, with Jake Horsey heading in the winner.
Minehead followed that 1-0 defeat with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday, winning at Staplegrove thanks to Callum Barnfield's first-half effort.
This coming Saturday (3pm) sees Chard host Minehead, and Staplegrove at home to Middlezoy.
Somerton Town had Joe Wilkinson (2), Tom Haggett, Jamie Brown and Luke Thomas on the scoresheet in a 5-2 victory away to Group F opponents Middlezoy Rovers Reserves.
Josh Ford and Steven Hall replied for Middlezoy's second string.
Group F also saw Street Reserves draw 2-2 away to Ilminster Town.
Connor Townsend took advantage of defensive hesitation from the hosts to put Street 1-0 ahead early on, but Sam Sheldrake found the bottom corner from 20 yards out to level.
Street captain Olly Walby gave his side the lead again after the interval, with a half-volley which hit the bar and bounced over the line, but it was 2-2 soon after, as Mike Whitefield produced a calm finish for Ilminster.
This Saturday (3pm) sees Street make the trip to play Somerton, while Ilminster visit Middlezoy.
In the Junior Cup, Glastonbury shot to the Group A summit with a 4-0 victory away to Tunley Athletic on Saturday, thanks to goals from Lee Gooding (2), Lee Bobbett and Alfie Russell.
Glastonbury visit Radstock Town Reserves this Saturday (3pm) and Peasedown Miners Welfare on Tuesday (6.30pm).
In Group B, Somerton Town Reserves won 4-2 at home to Combe St Nicholas - with Rhys Dyer scoring all four for the hosts, and Adam Male and Jack Steer replying for Combe.
Jason Loxton (2) and Joe Warren netted as Ashcott defeated Bishops Lydeard Reserves 3-1, with Harry Purser's goal for Lydeard coming in vain.
This Saturday (3pm), Ashcott host Somerton and Combe entertain Lydeard.
Burnham United Reserves kicked off their Group D challenge with a 2-1 win away to Cheddar Reserves; Elliot Keen and Benjamin Windram scored for the victors, with Scott Harman getting Cheddar's goal.
Burnham are at home to Winscombe Reserves on Saturday (3pm).
