Salisbury 1-2 Taunton Town
TAUNTON Town have returned to winning ways after coming out on top in their away match yesterday.
It was an important win following the end of their long unbeaten run last weekend and despite a slow start Taunton were the better side in this match-up in the Pitching In Southern League.
After a fairly tame affair from both sides in the opening 45 minutes, Town coming the closest to scoring when Jared Lewington drilled a shot against the post just before the break.
The Peacocks broke the deadlock after 56 minutes when Wannell glanced a Lloyd James free kick off the upright, the ball rebounding back into the net off Salisbury’s Josh Fawole.
The hosts drew level two minutes later when Antonio Diaz was adjudged to have been brought down and Charlie Davis drove home from the penalty spot.
However Town responded again, with Wannell grabbing what proved to be the decisive goal on 63 minutes when he headed home at the far post from a James corner.
The result keeps the Peacocks in 4th spot but with two of the three sides above them losing today the picture has improved further.
Up next, Taunton Town are at home on Tuesday night as they take on second bottom Merthyr Town at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium.
Kick off for that match is 7.45pm.
In other recent club news, the Peacocks welcomed back Jamie Short back to the club following his departure from the Cygnet Health Care Stadium last year.
It will be the third spell with the Peacocks for Short, having made his debut as far back as 2009 as a 16 year old and he has since gone on to play over 280 games for the club in a variety of positions.
After first leaving Town in 2016 he went on to play for Tiverton Town and Street before returning in May 2019 but then left to join Bristol Manor Farm over the summer.
