SOLID batting displays from Will Smeed and Tom Abell and then a fine bowling effort from Craig Overton saw Somerset defeat Surrey by 47 run victory.

The victory ensures Somerset will now play a home quarter final in the Vitality Blast, their opponent and match date is yet to be confirmed.

Surrey won the toss and elected to bowl first and the full crowd were treated to Will Smeed at his very best as he opened the batting with Tom Banton.

After a slow start which saw Banton run out for 9 runs after a poor decision and Rilee Rossouw out for 4 after two balls, Somerset then clicked into gear.

Smeed led the charge as he soared to a half century from 29 balls which featured 6 fours and 2 sixes.

But Abell was not far behind him as he reached his 50 soon after from 27 balls, also featuring 6 fours and 2 sixes.

The pair built a 150-run partnership that came from just 67 balls. During that time the crowd was entertained with some truly impressive cricket shots.

They took the score to 3 for 194 before Abell was caught by Aaron Hardie off a Reece Topley delivery in the 17th over. Smeed then fell on the final ball of the same over, caught by Cameron Steele.

From then on the tail order collapsed, managing just 21 runs in the last 3 overs from five batsman.

The final over bowled by Chris Jordan confirmed the collapse as three wickets fell; Tom Lammonby (7), Roelof van der Merwe (0) and Ben Green (11) were the three to fall.

In reply, Surrey got off to a terrible start as Craig Overton tore through the opening batsman in his first over. He bowled a maiden over in which he took the wickets of Will Jacks and Tom Curran.

In his second over he knocked over Jamie Smith (5) as he continued a truly fine spell of bowling that had Surrey at 3/11.

Laurie Evans and captain Chris Jordan salvaged the away sides innings though and after 10 overs they had moved Surrey to 4/94; Evans falling in the over for 39 runs as he was caught by Ben Green from a van der Merwe delivery.

Jordan reached 50 runs off 22 balls hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes in the process. Then in the next over van der Merwe took a second wicket of the evening, this time clean bowling Aaron Hardie (11).

The crowd were treated to the rematch between the Overton brothers in the 14th over as Craig bowled to Jamie from the Marcus Trescothick end. Jamie managed a boundary in the four balls he faced but Craig got him out helped by a Banton catch.

With 5 overs to go, Surrey needed 76 runs to pull off the win. Davey bowled the first of the five and was hit for 15 runs.

With the first ball of the 17th over Peter Siddle dismissed Jordan caught by George Bartlett who was subbed in for an injured Tom Abell. Jordan scored a career-high 73 runs in T20 competition.

Josh Davey dismissed Dan Moriarty with the final ball of the 18th over leaving Surrey needing 48 from 12 balls to win.

Peter Siddle dismissed, Cameron Steele with the first ball of the 19th and it was all over; Surrey conceding with an injured batsman. Somerset won by 47 runs.
