Wellington 44-15 Wiveliscombe
In front of a vocal crowd of over 1000 the annual Boxing Day game between two local rivals returned following a two year absence.
Playing towards the clubhouse The Chiefs started brightly and dominated territory & possession, a theme that continued throughout the game.
Liam Phillips opened the scoring for The Chiefs when he scampered over of an unconverted try following an impressive forward drive.
Soon after Wivey got on the score board themselves via a penalty after The Chiefs were penalised in front of their posts.
More pressure on Wivey’s ensued following this course & this pressure resulted two unconverted tries tries by Chris Kitto, again following an impressive forward drive, & Charlie Snow who finished off a fine attacking move.
Towards the end of the half The Chiefs George Hodgson was given ten minutes rest on the sidelines following a deliberate knock on.
Wivey exploited this numerical advantage scoring a well executed converted try in the final play of the half to make the half time score 15-10 after a scrappy half of rugby.
At half time The Chiefs knew with a little more composure & discipline there would be more scoring opportunities during the second period despite now playing away from the club house.
Immediately from the restart The Chiefs took a firm grip of the half, a grip they would not relinquish, again going onto dominate territory & possession along with dominating all phases of the game.
This improved control resulted in another three tries for Kitto & one for Vinny Gordan with Alex Davey being successful with two conversions.
Wivey did get their hands on the ball for a period of time towards the end of the half crossing for a consolation unconverted try but if was The Chiefs who fittingly had the last say just before the match ended when Will Hodgson crossed for The Chiefs eighth try of the match, which unconverted, to make final score 44-15 to The Chiefs.
A well deserved victory for The Chiefs who could have scored more than the eight tries they eventually did especially in the first half.
Chris Kitto with four tries was the toast of the clubhouse afterwards but the hard working Toby Redwood also deserved much praise from The Red & Black faithful.
Special mention must go to Keith Ware who fixed a big central boiler issue early on Boxing Day morning to ensure the 70+ players & officials had warm showers after both games.
