Crediton 27-23 Wellington
THE first game of the New Year ended in disappointment for The Chiefs as they came up short against a side challenging for league honours.
The rain in the days before the game made for a heavy and sticky playing surface but The Chiefs put this to the back of their minds going onto dominate play in terms of territory and possession but unfortunately never dominating the scoreboard.
Against the run of play The Chiefs found themselves 12 points down, Crediton had two opportunities to score, both chances were taken with one try being converted.
After numerous attempts & pressure on Creditons line The Chiefs got on the score board themselves through a Josh Hancock try which was converted by Will Brewer to make the halftime score a disappointing 12-7.
The second half was a bit more even in terms of territory and possession, again The Chiefs had the more scoring chances but like the first half Crediton’s well organised and solid all round defence thwarted these chances.
Crediton were again very clinical with their scoring chances, scoring two tries, one of which was converted plus a penalty late on.
The Chiefs points came via a penalty try midway through the half following a series of dominant scrums on Creditons line. Full time score 27-14 to Crediton.
Next week The Chiefs welcome Sidmouth to the Athletic Ground, a close encounter between the two sides earlier on in the season which the Devon side just edged so The Chiefs will be looking for a different result this time around which is sure to be another difficult game, kick off 2pm.
