Wellington 24-15 Wadebridge Camels
The Chiefs welcomed high flying Wadebridge Camels to The Athletic Ground last Saturday and on a damp day run out worthy winners in a competitive encounter.
Playing away from the clubhouse in the first period The Chiefs started well and took an early with a well manufactured unconverted team try by Alex Davey.
Further Chiefs chances came and went with Will Hodgson & Ollie Price to the fore before The Camels took the lead via a converted try following a Chiefs charged down clearance kick. Both sides had decent periods of pressure as the match ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the half but it was The Camels who went into the break ahead increasing their lead by 5 points via a penalty towards the end of the half.
The Chiefs were disappointed not to be leading at the break but after a halftime debrief they came out firing on all cylinders. In a thoroughly dominant 25mins The Chiefs played some excellent rugby which The Camels struggled to contain.
A superb break by the outstanding Ash Harney saw the ball find its way to George Hodgson who outpaced the defence for the Chiefs second try of the match, Davey stepped up to add the extras to give the Chiefs the lead.
Soon after that try The Chiefs scored their third try of the match following another pacey attack, Liam Phillips scampering over wide out, the extras could not be taken this time around.
The last 15 minutes of the half was a more even affair as The Camels started to get some territory and possession, their efforts paid off with a well worked unconverted driving maul try to reduce the arrears.
The 25 minute period in the second was the purple patch for The Chiefs playing some of the best rugby of the season, any team in the league would have difficulty containing them.
Both Hodgson boys were the toast of the clubhouse after the game but in reality the whole squad performed magnificently.
Next week The Chiefs welcome league leaders to The Athletic Ground, this game was organically due to take place pre-Xmas but fell foul to the weather.
The Saints are a top team so The Chiefs will once again need to be on top form - KO 2.30pm after the agonisingly narrow defeat to Hornets last Saturday the 2nd XV travel to North Petherton.
