Tribute South West One (West): Bridgwater and Albion 15-30 Wellington
PLAYING against the wind on a wet and bitterly cold afternoon The Chiefs made a poor start to the game going behind to an early converted try.
The elements were always going to play a major part in the game and this proved to be the case with both teams making numerous errors.
The Chiefs got back into the game when Liam Phillips crossed for an unconverted try following an unstoppable driving maul.
More Chiefs pressure followed the result was another powerful forward try, which unconverted, by Chris Kitto to take the lead.
Bridgwater responded with penalty after The Chiefs were penalised at the scrum. Despite playing against the elements The Chiefs started to gain dominance in all aspects of the game but it was Bridgwater who regained the lead through an unconverted try when a speculative pass was intercepted on the halfway line.
On the stroke halftime The Chiefs were camped on Bridgwater’s try line, a series of penalties conceded saw Bridgwater go down to 14, Will Brewer twisted his way over a try, which was converted by Alex Davey, following a dominant Chiefs scrum - halftime 15-17 to The Chiefs.
With the elements now in their favour The Chiefs went into dominate the second period with Bridgwater rarely threatening and did not trouble the scoreboard further.
Despite their dominance The Chiefs had only two Alex Davey penalties to show for their efforts despite having numerous scoring opportunities.
The try bonus point eventually came in the dying minutes of the half when George Hodgson finished off an attacking move that was superbly orchestrated by his fellow centre Mitch Fisher, Davey converted to make the final score 15-30 to The Chiefs.
A well deserved win for The Chiefs, the double over Bridgwater, in difficult playing conditions. The Chiefs forward pack gave their opposite numbers a torrid time all afternoon both in the tight and the loose whilst the back line despite the cold conditions were far more accomplished throughout.
Next week The Chiefs welcome Sidmouth to The Athletic Ground in the last league fixture of the season. When the sides met earlier in the season the Devon side ran out winners in a close fought encounter.
