Tribute South West Regional Two: Wellington 48-51 Topsham
SPECTATORS were treated to some great rugby entertainment at the weekend in the Wellington Chiefs match against Topsham.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they were narrowly beaten by Topsham in a match that had 99 points scored.
The final score was 49-51 in favour of Topsham in the match played at the Athletic Ground in Wellington.
As you can imagine it was back and forth for large parts of the game, but the visitors took an early lead before Ash Harney went over to level the scores for Wellington.
After a second Topsham try, the hosts hit back took the lead with a try by Cam Venn, converted by Rob Hooper who also kicked a penalty shortly after.
Topsham then ran in four unanswered tries to take a 36-15 lead but before half time, Chiefs captain Danny Lee and Chris Batts scored a try each, both of which were converted by Hooper. This meant at the break it was 36-29 to Topsham.
The Devon side extended their lead with another try after the break only for the Chiefs to bring it level at 41-41 with tries by Jonathan Clist and Venn.
Topsham then scored a converted try and a penalty to lead 51-41 before Hooper scored the last try of the game, which he converted, leaving Wellington agonisingly two points short at full time.
