Somerset Cup first round: Bridgwater & Albion 18-16 Wellington Chiefs
THE Wellington Chiefs were knocked out of the Somerset Cup after a very close defeat away to local rivals Bridgwater & Albion on Tuesday night (October 31).
In very wet conditions, the two sides battled it out and played some gritty rugby, however the final score was 18-16 in favour of the hosts.
Alex Davey got the Chiefs in front in the first half thanks to two penalties. Bridgwater got one of their own and the score at the break was 3-6 to Wellington.
The visitors extended that lead courtesy of another Davey penalty and then a try by Chris Batts which was converted by Davey to make it 3-16.
However, Bridgwater came back late on with a try and a penalty to bring the game back into contention.
This was all before Albion scored a 75th minute try to draw level and the made conversion sealed a place in the second round for the home side.
On Saturday, the Chiefs return to league matches with a trip to Truro – the fixture has been switched to Cornwall because it’s the annual fireworks display at the Athletic Ground that night.
