Counties 1 Tribute Western West: Wiveliscombe 19-17 Falmouth
Wiveliscombe secured their second league victory of the season in a closely contested game on the Wivey Rec Ground against Falmouth.
Credit must go to both teams and the referee for agreeing to play on a pitch which was frosted in places.
Playing down the slope in the first half Wiveliscombe took the lead when Richard Baker sprinted through the opponents defence forty yards out to score a fine individual try. Flyhalf Dan Quick added the conversion for 7-0.
Falmouth scored their first points soon after with a penalty from fullback Harvey Pennallurice after Wivey were penalised at a ruck.
The hosts lead at half time 19-3 after scoring two more tries through centre Will Thorne and Quick added a second conversion.
Falmouth had the upper hand in the second half although Wivey did have the odd opportunity to increase their lead.
Following a period of pressure near Wiveys try line hooker Leo Taine scored the visitors first try which Harvey Pennallurice converted to make it 19-10.
The visitors second try was scored by winger Nick Carne who made a fine catch after a wide kick to score in the corner. Pennallurice kicked a fine conversion to bring the game very close at 19-17.
The last quarter of the game was tense with the two bottom teams in the Western Counties League looking to secure a win.
Falmouth in eleventh position one place above bottom team Wiveliscombe remained there after securing a losing bonus point.
Both teams have two league victories with Falmouth on twelve points and Wivey on eleven.
