Counties 1 Tribute Western West: Wiveliscombe 29-12 St Ives
AT the weekend Wiveliscombe moved off the bottom of the Western Counties West league with this deserved victory over mid table St Ives, writes Roger Bellamy.
Wiveliscombe also have a chance to move up further if they win their game in hand over the two teams immediately above them.
St Ives were looking to move above their mid table position after defeating league leaders Plymstock last weekend but Wiveliscombe never allowed the Cornish men to settle and used their dominate scrum throughout the match to lead on the score board.
The home team playing up the slope in the first half scored their opening try through Centre Will Thorne finishing off a good threes move, flyhalf Dan Quick converted. 7pts 0pts.
Thorne crossed for his teams second try showing good pace and strength to score near the posts, Quick slotted his second conversion. 14pts 0pts.
Quick added a penalty just before half time to give Wiveliscombe a 17-0 lead at the break and it wrapped up a very dominant first period for the hosts.
St Ives had their moments in the second half and scored an early try through their threes finished off by Winger Adam Harris in the top corner. He also added the conversion. 17pts 7pts.
Wiveliscombe increased their lead through hooker Tom Stone after a period of pressure near the visitors try line. Dan Quick added his third conversion. 24pts 7pts.
The hosts secured their fourth bonus point try through winger Dan Rottenbury finishing off a threes move to score in the top corner to give Wiveliscombe a comfortable 29pts 7pts lead.
St Ives were rewarded for their spirit throughout the game with a second try through winger Bayley Rogers to give a score of 29-12 at full time.
Wiveliscombes next game will be the boxing day encounter against neighbours Wellington at Wivey.
The game will probably kick off at 2.30. The 2ndXV encounter at Plain Pond will be an 11 0clock KO.
