Somerset Division One: Middlezoy Rovers Reserves 0-0 Minehead
Facing a fellow mid-table side, Minehead were looking to record their first goal since mid-December but neither side managed to score in a game which the hosts edged from a possession perspective, writes Brian Walder.
During an even first quarter of an hour, it was Minehead who had created the most likely opening when Ryan Wilkins found fellow central defender Mike Graddon in an attacking position, but his shot was narrowly wide of the goal-frame.
The remainder of the first half saw the hosts grow in confidence as they made better use of the ball and retained possession more than the visitors were able to. Their best chances fell to former Minehead centre forward Zac Ryder whose first shot was well blocked by Vinnie Jones’ feet, followed by a missed opportunity to head home from 15 yards into an essentially open goal. The first half ended goal-less, with Zoy having more opportunities.
Ryder was again involved early in the second providing an accurate centre for Charlie Bridges who shot over the bar when well placed.
Ten minutes into the half Alfie Lyons came off the bench to replace hobbling defender Mike Graddon as Minehead re-shuffled, but Middlezoy finished the game pushing for the winning goal and two chances fell to substitute Sam Anthony whose first attempt when put through behind the Blues defence saw a comfortable save from Jones avert the danger.
Shortly afterwards the same player swivelled effectively whilst on the ball with his back to the goal, but his shot from fifteen yards was wide.
Without scoring neither side made claim all three points, but it will be the hosts who will have felt more disappointed at having to make do with one.
Man of the Match was awarded to Luke Badcock for his solid performance for Minehead.
Seventh placed Minehead are away again on Saturday when they visit fifth placed Burnham’s Cassis Close ground. A win would see Minehead go above Burnham, but not necessarily into fifth position.
