Toolstation Western League: Wellington 1-0 Helston Athletic

Resurgent Wellington saved their best performance of the season for their final home game with a shock victory over league leaders Helston Athletic at the Playing Field on Saturday, April 13.

It made amends for their midweek agony against second-placed Falmouth Town when another excellent display was foiled by an 86th minute winner.

This time, the Tangerines made no mistake – taking the lead just before half-time and then shutting out their high-riding visitors for the rest of the match.

Helston took the game to Richard Cherry’s side from the off, but Wellington again defended superbly and then stunned the title hopefuls by taking the lead.

Sully McKenna sent over a corner from the right and central defender Kieran Bailey, so impressive since signing from Westbury United, headed home unchallenged.

Wellington knew they were going to have to be at their best in the second half, but it was a similar story to the first with Helston having plenty of play without creating any clearcut chances.

They weren’t helped when influential midfielder Jordan Copp was sin binned but, after he turned to the action, they thought they had drawn level with two minutes of normal time remaining.

A thumping volley from sub Curtis Dammerell was heading for the top corner until keeper Jake Viney flung himself to produce a magnificent save.

Helston continued to launch the ball forward in stoppage time but there was no way through as Wellington followed up their draw in Cornwall on the opening day of the season.

The Tangerines now complete the season with four away games, starting with a short trip to playoff-chasing Bridgwater United on Tuesday, ko 7.45pm.
