Toolstation Western League: Oldland Abbotonians 0-2 Wellington
Victory at Oldland Abbotonians on Saturday, April 20 has ensured Wellington will be playing premier division football again next season.
They now have 29 points and can’t be caught by bottom club Millbrook – who still have six games to play – with only one team being relegated.
After their 5-3 defeat at Bridgwater United in midweek, the Tangerines had to grind out the victory at Oldland and boss Richard Cherry will be particularly pleased they kept a clean sheet.
A disappointing first half ended goalless with neither side creating a serious effort on goal.
But the game came to life after the break as Oldand missed an early chance from a corner before Wellington took the lead six minutes after the restart.
Young midfielder Josh Lukins skipped past a couple of players before firing in a low drive from 25 yards with the ball hitting the inside of the post on its way into the net.
Oldland nearly drew level just before hour mark when Cash Vinnall got in behind the visitors’ defence and rounded keeper Jake Viney, but defender Alex Cherry did well to get back and clear off the line.
After that, Wellington were able to close out the game with Joe Wragg and Sam Towler both going close to extending their lead.
They had to wait until the final minute to make it 2-0 with sub Danny Wordsworth sending over a corner from the left and Cherry poking the ball home from close range.
The Tangerines travel to Street on Wednesday for their penultimate game of the season, ko 7.30pm, before finishing off with their first trip to league newcomers Brixham next Saturday.
