Minehead Cricket Club travelled to Bridgwater to take on the 2nd XI for their third league game of the season, and after a match that was interrupted by rain The Pirates returned home with a seven wicket loss.
Minehead went into bat first and made a decent showing for themselves by hitting 233 in their allotted 50 overs.
Darren Sherring and Gregg Howard opened up the batting for The Pirates until Sherring was bowled for 15 runs from 13 balls by Bridgey’s Seth Locke, and Howard was taken out for 16 by Ben Coombes.
This took the team to 63-2 as third batsman Ian Buchanan had come in and started hitting big, reaching 50 runs in just 71 balls.
Just ten runs later Buchanan was removed for 60 by Tom Bellinger, and was followed by Dan Bowditch who also had an impressive innings.
Bowditch hit 51 runs off 68 balls and took his team’s tally to 162-4, before being sent home via an lbw from Seth Locke’s delivery.
From here though the effectiveness of Minehead’s batting line up was nullified, with Charlie Payne able to contribute the most to his team’s total by adding 25 from 23 balls.
Ellis Taylor, Lewis Goodrum, and Harry Tudball also all hit 11 to help the team to their total of 233 runs from 50 overs.
However, the Somerset weather had churned up and Bridgwater were given a revised target of 141 runs from 20 overs in an effort to try and complete the game.
Andrew Hallaran and Harminder Singh opened for the Bridgwater side and got to work immediately, knowing the over count was not in their favour.
Hallaran went on to hit 57 off of 28 balls, reaching his 50 after just 33 minutes, while his partner Singh hit 33 off 22 before being removed by Robert Spiers to make Bridgwater 86-1.
Bridgwater then dropped to 98-2 after Goodrum sent Hallaran back to the changing rooms thanks to a catch from Jonah Hopkins.
Goodrum then took his second wicket of the day to take out Chris Skidmore for 16 runs in the 13th over, but at 133-3 Bridgwater comfortably saw out the remainder of the run tally to end the game on 141-3 and win by seven wickets.
Minehead’s first team now gone on to host North Petherton at home on May 25th, when they will be trying to record their first league win of the season.
