SOMERSET'S young wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew has been named as the England Men U19s captain for the upcoming Youth ODI tri-series against Scotland and Ireland at Loughborough.
Thomas, who attends King’s College in Taunton, plays his club cricket for Taunton St Andrews, is still only 16 years old.
He has played up through the Somerset Pathway age groups and is currently on the Academy.
Thomas made his Somerset Second XI debut at the start of the 2023 season and earlier this summer played for England Under 19s in their third Youth International against Sri Lanka Under 19s at Hove.
The Somerset youngster will lead a Young Lions team that only includes three other capped players: Harry Moore, Sebastian Morgan and Alex Green.
Richard Halsall, head coach for the series, said: “It has been really exciting to see the development of the Under-19s this summer.
“We’ve seen a host of the squad from the Sri Lanka series go on to play first-team cricket and that gives us an opportunity to expose more young players to international cricket in this series.
“I am really looking forward to taking over the reins as coach from Yards.
“We know we will need to compete from ball one against Ireland and Scotland and I am looking forward to seeing the squad show off their skills in this series.”
