Wiveliscombe made an encouraging start to their Western Counties West league programme with a bonus point victory over Penryn.

With player-coach Tom Pearce at fly-half and Oliver Luxton at centre, Wiveliscombe, featuring two new faces in their starting 15, played up the slope in the first half.

The home side took the lead in the 12th minute with a well-constructed try by their threes, finished off by full-back Will Thorne, who also converted, making it 7-0.

The match then saw play concentrated in the centre third of the pitch for the next 20 minutes.

However, Wiveliscombe's defence successfully repelled the visitors' threes, and Tom Pearce helped relieve pressure with some effective defensive kicking.

A good period of pressure from the home forwards resulted in Wiveliscombe's second try, scored by Dan Smythe-Moore, bringing the score to 12-0.

Just before half-time, Wiveliscombe were awarded a penalty at a ruck, allowing Will Thorne to kick for a 15-point lead at the break.

In the second half, playing down the slope, Wiveliscombe increased pressure on the visitors, scoring a third try through second-row Rory Stone, which Will Thorne converted, making it 22-0.

Penryn, however, had good periods of play, particularly from their threes, who were rewarded with a try from their captain and centre, James Salisbury, who also converted, bringing the score to 22-7.

Desperate for a fourth bonus-point try, Wiveliscombe scored again from a threes move resulting in a second try for Will Thorne, who again converted, making it 29-7.

The game ended on a high for the home team, with player-coach Tom Pearce scoring a debut try to finish the match at 34-7.

Wiveliscombe's 2nd XV game against Bridgwater was cancelled as the visitors could not raise a team.

Next for the 1sts is an away trip to Penzance Amateurs, while the 2nds have no game scheduled.
