THE Newton Cup took place on Saturday at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club.
Named after the Newton Family, who owned the land and were the driving forces behind the setting up of the club in 1892, the competition was played as a Waltzing Bowmaker in teams of three.
At the end of the day Gary Kayser, Jeff Dyke and Iain Robertson were the clear winners with 83 points. Oliver Dawson, Johnny Oliver and Jonathan Webster were second with 80 points, and third place was claimed by the Drummond family: Henrietta, Karl and their son Ollie with 79.
Sunday’s Stableford was won by Harvey Dening with 41 points, four more than second placed Gareth Eggle with 37, while Mike Brunton was third with 34 and Jason Peacock claimed fourth on countback with 33.
Kevin Gidley with an impressive 42 points was the winner in the top division of last Wednesday’s Stableford, five clear of second placed Bruce Chadwick with 37, while Paul Thorogood was third with 36.
In Division Two, winner Craig Welsher returned with 43 points, seven more than second placed Robert Criddle with 36, while Bill Maginn was third on countback with 35.
The Senior Section Captain’s Away Day last week was a well supported occasion and saw a large group travel to Mendip Spring to play on what turned out to be a rather challenging course in extremely wet conditions.
As part of the day 20, pairs took part in the Cunneber Trophy, which this year was won with 42 points by Daren Carter and Jerry Palmer with 42 points.
Second place was claimed by Tim Paris and Paul Davies with 40 points, Bob Rayner and Gary Kayser were third on countback ahead of Ian and Craig McGown after both scored 39.
Congratulations to Charlie Hooper who claimed his first ever Hole in One last week. The former junior captain who now plays off a handicap of 3 claimed his ace at the at the par 3 10th hole.
